Bill Gore

Bill Gore grew up in Louisiana and seemed always to have a special connection to the natural sciences, the environment, and photography.  He studied chemistry in college, received a Ph.D. from Syracuse University, and from there went on to work as a researcher in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and imaging science. For a time, he led a research laboratory at Polaroid and contributed to the development of new photographic media. Bill studied photography with Sandi Haber Fifield and now lives and works in Connecticut. His photographic arts are grounded in the American landscape and search for ways to rethink the possibilities for visual expression as more than representation.  His images are deconstructed and reconstructed in ways that amalgamate and juxtapose multiple realities to express stories, memory, perception, history, the power of nature, and the effect of humans upon it. Two of his books, “Swipe” and “Side Roads” were in PHOTOBOOKS 2015 and 2016 at the Griffin Museum.  His handmade artist books include “Chez Pierre Has MOVED” 2018 and “Dimensions” 2022.  He recently co-authored “The Saugatuck Cosmology” with writer Ted Wade, and this work was featured in the 2024 Photobook Exhibition at the Griffin Museum.   His photographs have been exhibited across New England and have received awards and special recognition. With a PhD in Psychobiology from Rutgers, I studied social behavior in 3 monkey species. Then I had a career in medical informatics whose highlights included inventing an AI language for reasoning about events over time, and making perhaps the first true search engine to find clinical data for research.  Currently I write about our relation to Nature, the philosophy and sciences of the mind, the future of machine intelligence, and the underpinnings of cultural issues.  Sometimes these are dialogue-heavy dramatizations, a blend of science and fiction. My goal is to convey ideas that the media misses, knowledge and opinions that need to be in the public mind.

I formerly created my own images to go with my essays, but Bill Gore had stunningly better ones that he generously let me re-purpose.  Eventually we started to create together. Two Peppers Press is our new foundation for collaborating.
